After visiting with Grama and Grampa LaFasto for our first night, on Tuesday, December 18th, we set off for downtown and headed to the Field Museum to see the dinosaur bones and animal exhibits.
I'm not sure you can see it, but if you look to the right of my boot, the little grey spot was a poor mouse who did not survive the frigid cold (or met some other tragic fate, we can never know)...Of course it was the FIRST thing Dresden noticed when we told him to go stand by the sign. I told him the mouse was just sleeping, of course...Anyway, that was morbid, but it gets better, hahaha!
In front of Sue, the largest complete T-Rex skeleton in the U.S. Funny enough, that's not her real head; it's upstairs in a glass case because it is too heavy to be supported in the free-standing structure.

Of course, the bugs were Dresden's favorite thing!
There was an "underground" exhibit where you went through a "shrinking chamber" to become the size of insects, so you could see things from their perspective. Dresden was extremely freaked out and disturbed at the prospect that he was being made smaller for real, and it took some convincing to get him to even go in. It's funny what you think kids will think is awesome, that actually freaks them out! Eventually, he decided he would give it a try, but he was concerned about getting big again the entire time, poor guy!
I took this photo in honor of my Grandad, who always used to give me little gift boxes with locust shells in them, or better yet, even leave them on my pillows for me to discover before going to bed. It never went over well for me as a kid, but now I have a strange fondness for locust shells because they remind me of him.

One of the reasons we decided to go to the Field Museum was because they were featuring a 3D movie about the Giants of the Ice Age. To be honest, it was a pretty lame movie, and there were certain parts with flesh-tearing saber tooth cats that we definitely had to shield from Dresden's view, but he did really well watching it and keeping his glasses on, so at least that was a success!
I don't remember what this wall led into, but we thought it was cool...

Had to get a picture of Dunkleosteus. Dresden loves dinosaurs, Alex loves dinosaur fish, and dunkleosteus is his favorite. So...now you know! LOL.

This tic-tac-toe photo is the only real proof we have that Dresden joined us. He was just done at this point, and in no mood to pose for pictures.
This is a picture of Alex's "gluten-free" pizza - gluten free because it was made with an actual SAUSAGE crust. No gf dough, just dough made with sausage! His only comment was, "You have to really like sausage..." Ha!
I would have loved a sausage crust, but this year I had to stick with a veggie deep-dish to be healthy(ish) for Baby Girl. I have to say, it just wasn't the same as a good ol' pepperoni and sausage deep dish. But hey, there's always next year!
It was a busy, full day for our first day downtown and we enjoyed every minute of it! Even those where Dresden's age was in full-force and trying our patience, hehe. The next day would prove to be even more fun.
